    Biography of Wilhelm Dilthey

    Wilhelm Dilthey (1833-1911) was a German philosopher and psychologist known for his contributions to the fields of psychology and cultural values.

    He believed that the values of a culture become "objectified" in the psyche of an individual.

    Two Approaches to Psychology

    Dilthey divided psychology into two distinct disciplines based on their methodologies. The first was analytical (or "nomothetic") psychology, which aimed to explain introspective experiences by isolating the "atoms" of consciousness and synthesizing them into higher cognitive processes.

    The second discipline was descriptive (or "ideographic") psychology, which focused on understanding the holistic and unique aspects of an individual's mental life based on the
